The fourth BRUGGGORE film festival shows its colors

From April 24 to 27, 2024, the BRUGGGORE Film Festival will take place for the fourth time. Traditionally, the festival receives a new coat of paint for this. Dipped in bright orange, we take a clear position and identify ourselves as a place of tolerance. Inclusion plays an explicit role in film selection and communication. The festival motto Fantastic Horror and Beyond also enshrines this orientation: BRUGGGORE opens our eyes to beyond our expectations.

When choosing the color for the 2024 season, we let ourselves be taken from the classic movie poster THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (USA, 1935) inspire. The orange color is borrowed from the hair of Frankenstein's bride. The film is considered an icon of the LGBTQIA+ movement and has an iconic character simply because of its production. It was directed by Hollywood's first openly homosexual director James Whale, who specifically queer the leading role of Dr. Pretorius. But above all, Frankenstein's bride (played by Elsa Lanchester) is seen as representative of the struggle of the LGBTQIA+ community. Created to serve Frankenstein's monster as a bride, she defies the expectations of her creator and thus symbolically opposes the prevailing balance of power. The film is more than a horror classic — it made people who don't meet the norm feel they were being watched as early as 1935.

The festival dedicates its season special to THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and four other thematically appropriate films. Under the motto “celebrating the underdog,” we are celebrating outsiders and otherness in 2024. The full program and further information will be published on the website at the beginning of March.

On the fourth BRUGGGORE, over 40 international feature films will once again be shown at the Excelsior and Odeon cinemas from April 24 to 27, 2024. In addition to many exclusive and premiere Swiss presentations, an extensive retrospective will be shown. Once again, the “Eye of the Beholder” award is presented by the audience and the director of the winning film receives 5,000 francs in prize money.
