Formicula what?!

Them!

Season Special: Nature's Tipping Point

Nuclear tests in New Mexico have unexpected effects on the local insect world. Ants start mutating and become gigantic, man-eating monsters. Them catches impressively! The spirit of the time, the fear of nuclear energy and weapons, and shows grandiose cinematic effects.

Only the German translation professionals, who quickly renamed the film title to “Formicula”, have caused confusion. This is derived from the Latin word “Formica” for ant. From a linguistic point of view, it is interesting to know that in 1954, more Germans apparently spoke Latin than English.

For our season special “Nature's Tipping Point”, IT's THEM! an exciting contemporary document. The film shows how Hollywood has repeatedly addressed and processed the concerns and fears of humanity over the course of history. In the 1950s, in the midst of the Cold War, the fear of a nuclear conflict was omnipresent and in the minds of creative screenwriters, it became monster ants. However, there is likely to be an exciting truth hidden in the story. Ants are thought to exist in over 20,000 species and have existed for over 100 million years. There is a good chance that they will survive our interventions in their habitat and in nature itself much better than we do ourselves.
