After the Gates of Hell trilogy, we're continuing our unofficial Fulci marathon with THE NEW YORK RIPPER.
In the 1970s, New York degenerated into a juggernaut of violence, corruption, murder, drugs and prostitution. Unemployment and lack of prospects ruled the city, which greeted its guests with “Welcome to Fear City.” For 13 months, the constant fear of the New York population was further reinforced by David Berkowitz. As a serial killer “Son of Sam,” he drove through the streets, injuring and killing women without connection.
No, that is not the story of THE NEW YORK RIPPER, that was reality in 1976/1977 and probably gave Maestro Lucio Fulci the inspiration for the film LO SQUARTATORE DI NEW YORK. As quickly as the story is told (murderer kills people, police search for him), this “Fulci” is so brilliant, atmospheric, bloody and erotic and is one of the most famous and best films by the legendary Italian director. Once you've seen and heard the movie, you'll never hear Donald Duck's chattering voice with the same ears again.
