Crossing Nature's Tipping Point

The Happening

Season Special: Nature's Tipping Point

Without warning, a wave of mysterious suicides sets in motion on the East Coast of America. Thousands of people fall victim to this pandemic and kill themselves as if in a trance. But what causes this behavior and how can you protect yourself against it?

M. Night Shyamalan doesn't have an easy stand. Since he surprised the whole world with THE SIXTH SENSE and Hollywood celebrated him as a child prodigy, his films have been dismantled on the dissection bench. Whether rightly or wrongly, we are happy to leave it up to self-proclaimed critics. There is no doubt that there are always new, surprising, courageous ideas for him that leave you completely in the dark at first. This is also the case with THE HAPPENING.

Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel must flee from an intangible phenomenon that drives people around them to commit suicide. Why exactly this film is part of our season special “Nature's Tipping Point” can unfortunately not be revealed without spoilers. But we are particularly looking forward to the lively discussions following the film.

Beware! [Self-harm]

As with every M. Night Shyamalan movie, there are likely to be two camps here. The admirers and the haters. I've listened to both of them. When I went to the cinema in 2008, I hated the movie and cursed everyone who liked it. 16 years later, I saw it with new eyes. While the beginning with rough pictures immediately captivates, the end becomes a bitterly angry social satire. In 2008, I could not and did not want to understand Shyamalan's message yet. Today, it is fearfully topical and although not (yet) as shown: Nature is about to fight back a long time ago!
