As Father as Children?

Megalomaniac

MEGALOMANIAC (2022) is fascinating, dark, brutal — and part of our Official Competition. The fourth film by Belgian director Karim Ouelhaj takes place on a deep, psychological level and demands a lot from viewers. A powerful work characterized by overwhelming images and strong performance by the cast. The fact that the film is also inspired by true events makes it even more frightening.

Martha and Félix are the children of the butcher of Mons — a notorious Belgian serial killer. Martha is plagued by uncertainties and lives her life on social media. Her brother, on the other hand, is more likely to follow in his father's footsteps. The gentle Martha, who is harassed and violently attacked at work, becomes increasingly insane and continues into her brother's strange and terrifying world.

Megalomaniac is part of our Official Competition. Vote at the festival and decide which of five films receives the “Eye of the Beholder” award. You will receive the voting cards before the performance. The grand awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10:00pm at Cinema Excelsior.

Dark and overwhelming. This is bitterly angry psychological horror made in Europe. New French Extremity? No, rather a development towards complex psychological horror. It doesn't always have to be splatter and gore.
