GUEULES NOIRES literally stands for black faces (or mouths). It is the French name for the buddies, miners, miners who do their work in eternal darkness during the day. As if this job wasn't demanding enough, a group of them are sent on an archaeological mission with a professor. When a landslide cuts off their way back, a fight for survival begins — not just against nature.
Fans of French horror cinema will be following director Mathieu Turi for a long time. With HOSTILE (2017) and MEANDRE (2020), he has already shown that he likes oppressive stories and claustrophobic space. GUEULES NOIRES (THE DEEP DARK) continues along this path, but goes one step further in terms of production technology. A mine in France in the 1950s is a menacing place in itself and the miners are not the friendliest figures. When they too have to deal with fear, you know that a serious threat has risen from deep within the earth.
