“Vinegar Syndrome” is the name of the process in which acetic acid forms on old film material and allows it to decompose slowly. “Vinegar Syndrome” is also the name of an American film distributor who specializes in receiving genre films, cult and exploitation films. EIGHT EYES is the first film that was not only awarded but co-produced by the boutique label.
The theme of “film material” is also omnipresent in this new Vinegar Syndrome production: The story of an American couple who get lost in gloomy parts of former Yugoslavia is filmed on 16mm film and comes aptly old school therefore.
The cinematic nostalgia trip, a wonderfully wacky homage to 70s exploitation films, is unconventional and experimental. Because when the tourists in EIGHT EYES fall into the criminal underworld, the psychedelic metaphysical isn't too far off. Your trip into the distance becomes a hell of an experience.
